What This Practice Exam Covers

The Texas Residential Appliance Installer licensing exam is 80 questions, 240 minutes, with a 70% passing score (56 correct). It draws from seven topic areas rooted in the NEC, covering everything from load calculations and GFCI protection to pool equipment and motor disconnects.

What You'll Be Tested On

Definitions, Calculations, and Theory — 12 items
The heaviest math section on the exam. Expect NEC code definitions, branch-circuit load calculations for dwelling units, and feeder/service calculations using demand factors. You must know how to apply demand factors for specific appliances — ranges, dryers, and cooking equipment each have their own table treatment. A question might give you a list of appliances and ask for the calculated load after demand factors are applied. Knowing the NEC's stated purpose and scope (practical safeguarding of persons and property) is also tested.

GFCI Protection and Equipment Grounding and Bonding — 15 items
The second-largest topic. Questions cover where GFCI protection is required, exceptions to those requirements, and the rules governing equipment grounding conductors. Equipotential bonding — especially in pool and spa contexts — shows up here as well. Expect scenario-based questions: a specific location is described, and you determine whether GFCI protection is required.

Electrical Wiring Methods and Electrical Materials — 10 items
Raceways, boxes and enclosures, cables, flexible cords, and conductors. Questions test installation rules: box fill calculations, permitted uses of specific cable types, raceway fill limits, and conductor ampacity. Know the difference between wiring methods permitted in wet versus damp versus dry locations.

Electrical Equipment and Devices — 15 items
Tied for the most items on the exam. Covers receptacles, switches, and devices; appliance installation rules; workspace clearance requirements; and utilization equipment. Workspace clearance questions are specific — dimensions matter. Appliance questions focus on installation requirements: dedicated circuits, circuit ratings, and cord-and-plug connections.

Motors — 5 items
Five questions, but the rules are dense. You need conductor sizing for motor branch circuits, overload protection trip-current ratings, and short-circuit/ground-fault protective device ratings (including the percentage multipliers applied to motor FLA). Know disconnecting means requirements — type, rating, and location. Motor controller ratings and markings are also tested.

Electrical Control Devices and Disconnecting Means — 5 items
Switch types and ratings: AC/DC snap switches, dimmers, CO/ALR devices, and electronic controls. Disconnecting means rules for motors, motor controllers, and service equipment — including the maximum number of service disconnects and location requirements. Overcurrent protection: standard ampere ratings for fuses and circuit breakers, and conditions that allow the next-higher rating.

Swimming Pool, Spas and Fountain Equipment — 18 items
The largest single topic — nearly a quarter of the exam. Covers pool heaters, pool covers, wet-niche and dry-niche luminaires, pumps, and horizontal and vertical clearance requirements for overhead conductors. Clearance numbers are heavily tested. Pool luminaire installation details — bonding, flexible cord requirements, GFCI protection — appear frequently. Know Article 680 closely.

Question 1 — Swimming Pool, Spas and Fountain Equipment

The end of the flexible-cord jacket and the flexible-cord conductor terminations within a wet-niche luminaire shall be covered with, or encapsulated in, a suitable ______ to prevent the entry of water.

  • B. Waterproof tape
  • C. Potting compound
  • D. Rubber gasket

Correct Answer: C — Potting compound

The NEC is specific here: it's not tape or sealant — it's potting compound. Per NEC Handbook, Section 680.23(B)(4), the flexible-cord jacket end and conductor terminations within a wet-niche luminaire must be covered with or encapsulated in a suitable potting compound to block water entry through the cord or conductors. This is a memorization question; knowing the exact term is the only way to answer it correctly.


Question 2 — GFCI Protection and Equipment Grounding and Bonding

Receptacles that are not readily accessible and are supplied by a branch circuit dedicated to electric snow-melting equipment are exempt from GFCI protection requirements. True or False?

Correct Answer: TRUE

NEC 210.8(A), Exception No. 1 carves out this specific exemption. Receptacles that are not readily accessible and are supplied by a dedicated branch circuit for electric snow-melting, deicing, or pipeline and vessel heating equipment may be installed per 426.28 or 427.22 without GFCI protection. Two conditions must both be met: not readily accessible, and dedicated to that specific equipment type.


Question 3 — Electrical Equipment and Devices

GFCI protection is required for all 125-volt through 250-volt receptacles in dwelling unit bathrooms when supplied by single-phase branch circuits rated how many volts or less to ground?

  • A. 120 volts
  • B. 150 volts
  • C. 240 volts
  • D. 277 volts

Correct Answer: B — 150 volts

Per Article 210.8(A), the threshold is 150 volts to ground — not 120 volts, which is a common wrong answer. The question tests whether you know the actual voltage-to-ground threshold in the code, not just the general rule that bathrooms require GFCI protection.


How to Read Your Score

Passing requires 70% — 56 out of 80 questions correct.

Your first practice attempt is a diagnostic, not a grade. Use it to find out which of the seven topics are costing you points, not to decide whether you're ready. A topic-by-topic breakdown tells you exactly where to focus: if you're losing points on Swimming Pool, Spas and Fountain Equipment, that's 18 real exam questions at risk.

Scoring in the low 70s on practice exams should not feel like passing clearance. Questions on the real exam may be worded differently or emphasize edge cases not covered in your first few attempts. Aim for consistent scores in the upper 70s or above before scheduling.

Scoring below 70% on your first attempt is normal — treat it as a roadmap. Retake the full practice exam after targeted study on weak topics. Because the pool has 365+ questions, each attempt surfaces new material.


Where Candidates Lose Points

Misapplying demand factors. The Definitions, Calculations, and Theory section requires demand factor calculations for ranges, dryers, and cooking equipment — each follows different rules. Candidates apply the wrong table or skip the demand factor step entirely.

GFCI exception details. The GFCI topic has exceptions that require two conditions to both be true (as in the snow-melting example above). Missing one condition flips the answer.

Pool clearance numbers. Swimming Pool, Spas and Fountain Equipment is 18 questions. Horizontal and vertical clearance values are specific and easily confused. One wrong number costs you a question.

Workspace clearance dimensions. The Electrical Equipment and Devices topic includes workspace clearance requirements. Candidates confuse the three condition columns or misremember the depth and height minimums.

Motor multiplier confusion. In the Motors section, different multipliers apply to conductor sizing versus overcurrent protection versus overload protection. Mixing up which percentage goes where is a consistent source of errors.

Running out of time. 240 minutes for 80 questions is three minutes per question — enough time, but only if you don't stall on calculation questions. The calculation-heavy topics (Definitions/Calculations and Motors) can slow you down and compress time for the pool section, which has the most questions.
