Key Concepts

Purpose of the NEC (Article 90.1–90.2) The NEC exists for practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity. It is not a design specification or instruction manual for untrained persons. Compliance produces installations that are essentially free from hazard — but not necessarily efficient, convenient, or adequate for future expansion.

What the NEC Covers (90.2(C)) - Public and private premises: buildings, structures, mobile homes, recreational vehicles, and floating buildings - Yards, lots, parking lots, carnivals, industrial substations - Shore power to ships/watercraft in marinas - Bidirectional current flow (vehicle-to-premises)

GFCI Protection (NEC Article 210 & 215)

What GFCI protects: Personnel from ground-fault current. Trips when current imbalance between hot and neutral exceeds ~5mA.

GFCI cannot be reconditioned — NEC 210.2 explicitly prohibits reconditioning of GFCI protection equipment. Same rule applies to AFCI devices.

Required GFCI locations for residential (NEC 210.8(A)): - Bathrooms - Garages and accessory buildings - Outdoors - Crawl spaces (at or below grade) - Basements (unfinished) - Kitchens — receptacles serving countertop surfaces - Sinks — within 6 ft of the outside edge of a sink - Boathouses - Bathtubs or shower stalls — within 6 ft - Laundry areas

Key rule: GFCI protection is required regardless of whether the circuit is grounded or ungrounded. An ungrounded circuit can still use a GFCI receptacle — it must be labeled "No Equipment Ground."

GFCI for appliances: Dishwashers, electric vehicle charging, and certain HVAC equipment have specific GFCI requirements. Receptacles within 6 ft of laundry, utility, and wet bar sinks require GFCI protection.

Key Concepts

Article 300 — General Requirements for Wiring Methods and Materials

• Scope (300.1): Article 300 covers all wiring installations unless modified by other Chapter 3 articles. It does not apply to conductors that are integral parts of equipment (motors, controllers, factory-assembled equipment).

• Voltage limits (300.2): Chapter 3 wiring methods apply at 1000V AC / 1500V DC or less unless specifically permitted otherwise.

• Conductors of the same circuit (300.3(B)): All conductors of the same circuit — including grounded conductors, equipment grounding conductors (EGCs), and bonding conductors — must be in the same raceway, cable, conduit body, or cord. This prevents inductive heating issues.

• Conductors of different systems (300.3(C)): AC and DC circuits rated 1000V AC / 1500V DC or less may share the same raceway or enclosure, but all conductors must be insulated for the highest voltage present in that enclosure.

Switches (Article 404)

• All switching must be done in the ungrounded (hot) conductor only — never switch the neutral (404.2(A)).
• Switches and circuit breakers shall not disconnect the grounded conductor unless all circuit conductors are disconnected simultaneously (404.2(B)).
• A grounded (neutral) conductor must be present at switch locations controlling lighting loads in bathrooms, hallways, stairways, and habitable rooms served by grounded general-purpose branch circuits — this enables electronic control devices to function in standby mode (404.2(C)).
• Switches must be externally operable and mounted in a listed enclosure (404.3(A)).
• Damp/wet locations: Surface-mounted switches need a weatherproof enclosure per 312.2; flush-mounted switches need a weatherproof cover (404.4(A) and (B)).
• No switches inside tub or shower spaces unless part of a listed tub/shower assembly (404.4(C)).
• Switch handles operated vertically must move up = ON, down = OFF (404.7).
• Single-throw knife switches must be positioned so gravity does not tend to close them (404.6(A)).

Governing Code: NEC Article 430 — All motors, motor circuits, and controllers are covered under Article 430 (referenced in Table 240.3). This is your primary code reference for motor-related questions.

Motor Overcurrent Protection vs. Overload Protection — These are two distinct things: - Overload protection protects the motor windings from sustained overheating during running conditions (thermal protection, usually built into the motor or starter). - Short-circuit and ground-fault protection protects the branch circuit conductors and is typically provided by a fuse or circuit breaker sized larger than the motor's full-load current (FLC).

Full-Load Current (FLC) — Always use NEC Tables 430.248 (single-phase) or 430.250 (three-phase) to determine FLC for sizing purposes — do not use the nameplate ampere rating for calculating conductor ampacity or overcurrent device size. Use the nameplate only for overload protection sizing.

Motor Branch-Circuit Conductors (430.22) — Must be sized at not less than 125% of the motor's FLC from the NEC tables.

Example: A motor with a 10A FLC requires conductors rated for at least 12.5A (10 × 1.25).

Service Disconnecting Means (Article 230, Part VI) Every service must have a disconnecting means to disconnect all service entrance conductors from the interior wiring. Key rules:

• The service disconnect must be installed at a readily accessible location either outside the building or inside nearest the point of service entrance — it cannot be in a bathroom.
• A maximum of six disconnects (six-throw rule) are permitted as the service disconnecting means for a single service.
• The service disconnect must be marked to identify it as a service entrance.
• Each service disconnect must simultaneously disconnect all ungrounded service conductors.

Controllers (Article 430, Part VII) A controller is any device used to start and stop a motor or appliance. For residential appliance work:

• A controller must be capable of interrupting the stalled rotor current of the motor it serves.
• The branch-circuit switch or circuit breaker is permitted to serve as the controller for stationary appliances rated at 1/8 HP or less.
• For appliances, the unit switch (built-in on/off switch) may serve as the controller if it disconnects all ungrounded conductors and is marked ON/OFF.…

Governing Code: NEC Article 680 covers all swimming pools, spas, hot tubs, fountains, and similar installations.

Bonding & Grounding (Article 680.26)

• All metal parts within 5 feet of the pool wall and all conductive pool equipment must be bonded together using a solid copper conductor, minimum 8 AWG.
• The bonding grid connects: pool shell reinforcing steel, metal fittings, pump motors, lights, ladders, diving boards, and metal within 5 ft.
• Equipment grounding is separate from bonding — both are required.
• The earth is NOT an effective ground-fault current path (per 250.4).

Pool Luminaires (680.23)

• Underwater luminaires operating above 15V must be protected by a GFCI.
• Wet-niche fixtures must be installed so the top of the fixture lens is at least 18 inches below the normal water surface.
• Luminaire forming shells must be bonded; equipment grounding conductor must be 12 AWG minimum copper, insulated.
• No luminaires, lighting outlets, or ceiling fans within 12 feet horizontally of the pool edge (exceptions apply for recessed fixtures meeting specific height requirements).
