Service Entrance & Service Equipment (Article 230) - Services must be installed per Article 230; service conductors run from the utility to the service disconnecting means. - 230.70: The service disconnecting means must be installed at a readily accessible location either outside the building or inside nearest the point of conductor entry. For sign applications, know where the disconnect is required relative to the sign structure. - 230.71: Maximum of six disconnects per service grouping. Each disconnect must be marked to identify its load. - 230.79: Service disconnect ampere ratings — a single-family dwelling requires minimum 100A; other installations vary by load. - 230.95: Ground-fault protection of equipment (GFPE) required for solidly grounded wye services of more than 150V to ground but not exceeding 600V phase-to-phase, where the service disconnect is rated 1000A or more.

Key Concepts

Article 215 governs feeders not exceeding 1000V AC or 1500V DC (nominal). For higher voltages, see Article 235, Part III.

Minimum Ampacity (215.2(A)): Feeder conductors must have ampacity not less than the larger of: - 215.2(A)(1): Noncontinuous load + 125% of continuous load - 215.2(A)(2): Maximum load after applying adjustment/correction factors per 310.14

Exceptions to the 125% rule: - If the assembly (including overcurrent devices) is listed for 100% operation, conductors may be sized at 100% continuous + noncontinuous load - Exception No. 3: Grounded conductors not connected to an overcurrent device may be sized at 100% of continuous and noncontinuous load

Overcurrent Protection (215.3): The OCP device rating shall not be less than noncontinuous load + 125% of continuous load. Same 100% exception applies if the assembly is listed for 100% rating.

Key Concepts

Grounded Conductor Identification (Article 200)

• 6 AWG or smaller (200.6(A)): Must be identified by continuous white outer finish, continuous gray outer finish, three continuous white/gray stripes on non-green insulation, or white/gray insulation with colored tracer threads.
• 4 AWG or larger (200.6(B)): Same color options as above, OR can be identified at time of installation by distinctive white or gray marking encircling the insulation at terminations.
• Multiconductor cables (200.6(E)): Grounded conductor must have continuous white or gray finish or three white/gray stripes. Re-identification at terminations is permitted via Exception No. 1.

Grounded Conductor Insulation (200.2(A))

• For systems 1000V or less: Insulation must be rated the same as the ungrounded conductors on the same circuit.
• For solidly grounded neutral systems over 1000V: Rated not less than 600V per 250.184(A).

Key Concepts

Scope (300.1): Article 300 applies to all wiring installations unless modified by other Chapter 3 articles. It does not apply to conductors that are integral parts of equipment (motors, controllers, factory-assembled equipment).

Voltage Limits (300.2(A)): Chapter 3 wiring methods are rated for 1000V AC / 1500V DC or less by default. Use above those thresholds only where specifically permitted elsewhere in the Code.

Conductors of the Same Circuit (300.3(B)): All conductors of the same circuit — including the grounded conductor, equipment grounding conductors (EGC), and bonding conductors — must be in the same raceway, cable, conduit body, auxiliary gutter, cable tray, or trench. Exceptions exist for paralleled installations and certain grounding/bonding conductors.

Key Concepts

Article 404 Scope (404.1) Covers all switches, switching devices, and circuit breakers used as switches operating at 1000 volts and below. Does not cover wireless control equipment with no circuit conductors connected.

Switch Connections (404.2) - Three-way and four-way switches: All switching must occur only in the ungrounded conductor. Exception: switch loops do not require a grounded conductor. - Grounded conductors: Switches and circuit breakers shall not disconnect the grounded conductor unless all circuit conductors are disconnected simultaneously, or the grounded conductor cannot be disconnected until all ungrounded conductors are open first (404.2(B)). - Switches controlling lighting loads (404.2(C)): A grounded circuit conductor must be installed at switch locations controlling lighting in bathrooms, hallways, stairways, and habitable/occupiable rooms on grounded general-purpose branch circuits. Article 430 governs all motor installations. For the Master Sign Electrician exam, focus on how motors interact with sign circuits and general wiring requirements.

Branch-Circuit Conductor Sizing (430.22): Conductors supplying a single motor must be sized at not less than 125% of the motor's full-load current (FLC). This is the foundational motor conductor rule — know it cold.

Several Motors or Mixed Loads (430.24): When a circuit supplies multiple motors or a motor combined with other loads, size conductors at 125% of the largest motor's FLC + 100% of all other loads. This aligns with NEC 220.11(A), which states that for motor-operated utilization equipment (motor >1/8 hp) combined with other loads, the total calculated load = 125% of the largest motor load + sum of remaining loads.

Disconnecting Means — General Requirements (NEC Article 600) Sign disconnecting means must be within sight of the sign and readily accessible. "Within sight" means visible and not more than 50 ft from the equipment. Every sign or outline lighting system must have an individual disconnect rated for the load and accessible to authorized personnel.

Article 600 governs electric signs and outline lighting. Every candidate must know these foundational rules cold:

• 600.2 Definitions: Know the distinctions between electric sign, outline lighting, skeleton tubing, gas tube, LED sign, and field-installed skeleton tubing. These terms appear throughout exam questions and are frequently tested.

• 600.5 Branch Circuits: Each commercial building or occupancy must have at least one 20-ampere branch circuit installed for sign or outline lighting use. This circuit is dedicated — it cannot supply other loads. It must be installed at each entrance to each tenant space.
