About This Book
Every three years, the National Fire Protection Association officially updates the National Electrical Code. Staying informed about the latest NEC changes helps professionals remain compliant and uphold safe practices.
The 2023 National Electrical Code introduces updated requirements for GFCI protection, AFCI protection, surge protection, and more. This guide covers the key electrical code changes in the 2023 NEC, including the most recent state adoptions.
Despite its name, the National Electrical Code is not a federal law in the United States; however, it is commonly mandated at the state or local government level. NEC 2020 included extensive revisions to the electrical code. The NFPA Standards Council issued NEC 2023 on August 12, 2022, with an effective date of September 1 for federal, state, county, and municipal governments.
The following reflects the status of NEC adoptions across the United States for both NEC 2020 and NEC 2023 as of March 1, 2025. Note that individual states may make exceptions or amendments to portions of the code, so always confirm your local requirements to remain compliant.
