2018 International Fuel Gas Code (IFGC)

Also known as: IFGC 2018

About This Book

The following outlines key updates to the code governing the design and installation of fuel gas systems and gas-fired appliances, which establishes both prescriptive and performance requirements:

  • Arc-Resistant CSST: A new section has been added to recognize arc-resistant corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) products.

  • Schedule 10 Steel Pipe: The code now permits the use of Schedule 10 steel pipe, expanding options beyond the previously required minimum of Schedule 40. Schedule 10 pipe joints may be welded, brazed, flanged, or assembled using press-connect fittings; however, threading is not permitted.

  • Appliance Shutoff Valve Access: The code clarifies that shutoff valves located behind movable appliances — such as ranges and clothes dryers — are considered accessible, satisfying the access requirements.

  • Plastic Vent Pipe Labeling: Plastic vent pipe must now be labeled to confirm compliance with the standards specified by the manufacturer for the particular pipe material. Alternatively, plastic pipe may be listed under UL 1738 in all cases.

  • Direct-Vent Terminal Clearances: The required clearances between direct-vent appliance vent terminals and openings in a building's exterior — where combustion products could potentially enter — have been revised.
